About therapeutic sunscreens
Therapeutic sunscreens are products that protect skin from ultraviolet (UV) damage and prevent sunburn. Examples include lotions with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or 50 plus.

Most therapeutic sunscreens are listed in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). They can only use our approved ingredients and indications for sunscreens. A sunscreen needs to be registered in the ARTG if it contains non-permitted ingredients or non-approved indications. Where this is the case, we assess the quality, safety and efficacy of products that are registered in the ARTG before they go on the market.
You must certify that your product meets all safety, quality and efficacy requirements.
We can check any sunscreen listed in the ARTG that is on the market to make sure it’s safe, of high quality and only makes approved claims.
You must meet certain obligations to legally supply therapeutic goods in Australia. This section contains guidance and information specific to therapeutic sunscreens. You may also have to meet obligations that apply to all medicines and all products.
