TGA to consult on additional controls for an active sunscreen ingredient

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has conducted a review and is proposing options for additional safeguards for 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC), an active ingredient used in some Australian sunscreens.

A comprehensive public and stakeholder consultation will begin today to consider the recommendations from the review as well as two applications received by the TGA. We are consulting on proposed changes to reduce the permitted concentration of 4-MBC in sunscreens as a precautionary measure.

The TGA's review was prompted by regulatory decisions made by overseas sunscreen regulators. The TGA considered international evidence in conjunction with our independent assessment using the Australian Sunscreen Exposure Model.

Australians should continue to use sunscreen.The TGA is not proposing a change in use of sunscreen, or any warnings, bans or recalls of any products. Sunscreen remains an important way to help prevent sunburn, skin damage and skin cancer.

For the best protection, apply sunscreen, seek shade, and wear protective clothing, hats and sunglasses.
