The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) hosted the 10th meeting of the Women’s Health Products Working Group (WHPWG) on 17 July 2025. The WHPWG is comprised of representatives from consumer groups, health professionals, industry, academia, and senior officials from the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.
The following topics were presented:
- The difficulties and potential privacy issues faced during security screening protocols when travelling with a medical device.
- Emerging regulatory options for menstrual sponges and the coordination of regulatory options between State and Federal jurisdictions.
- Challenges for the regulation of laser use in obstetrics and gynaecology, particularly around cosmetic applications, misleading advertising, and consumer misinformation.
- The use of predatory marketing techniques for women’s health products on social media leading to increased health anxiety.
- An update on a recent Drug Information Association meeting including presentations from the Edelman Trust and International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH).
- Current TGA processes that are in place to combat the unlawful advertising of women’s health products and other therapeutic goods.
- A review of the WHPWG membership and Terms of Reference to ensure relevant stakeholder representation on the group, that the group remains fit for purpose and that it is within the original scope agreed to by the Minister.
The next WHPWG meeting is scheduled to be held on 30 October 2025.
