TGA statement on Consumer NZ sunscreen testing

The TGA is aware of recent sunscreen testing undertaken by Consumer NZ, which reported Sun Protection Factor (SPF) results for a number of sunscreens.

The TGA takes concerns about the performance and labelling of sunscreens seriously and will consider the reported results to determine whether further investigation or regulatory action in Australia is warranted.

There is known variability associated with SPF testing, and an individual test result needs to be considered in the context of the full testing and broader evidence supporting a product's SPF claim. Differences between an individual SPF test result and a labelled SPF claim do not, by themselves, mean a sunscreen provides no protection or is unsafe to use.

Expert advice remains that sunscreen is an important part of protecting against the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation. Australians should continue to use sunscreen as part of their sun protection measures. Consumers should also exercise caution when buying sunscreens that are not included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. These products are not regulated by the TGA, so consumers cannot be assured of their ingredients, quality or safety, or how well they work.
