The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has issued an infringement notice of $2,664 to a NSW-based medical practitioner for the alleged unlawful importation of a prescription-only medicine.
It is alleged that the person illegally imported an unregistered prescription-only medicine typically used to treat HIV. The medicine, imported from India, was not on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods and they did not have approval or authority for the import.
It is alleged that the medicine was imported to give to patients as a treatment for long COVID symptoms, which is not an approved use for the drug in Australia. The medicine has been seized at the border and will not be released.
If you suspect non-compliance in relation to therapeutic goods, you can report illegal or questionable practices online to the TGA.
