What is the problem?
The product label is missing a required warning about phenylalanine. Spirulina, one of the product’s active ingredients, is naturally high in phenylalanine and its declaration is required under relevant labelling standards.
Additionally, the product specifies a maximum daily dose of 12 capsules, each containing 500 mg of poliglusam. This results in a total daily intake of 6000 mg, which significantly exceeds the permitted limit of 1750 mg as specified in the Therapeutic Goods (Permissible Ingredients) Determination (No. 2) 2025.
What are the risks?
Exposure to phenylalanine poses a serious risk to individuals with phenylketonuria (PKU), as it can lead to severe neurological complications if not carefully managed.
Overconsumption of poliglusam may result in gastrointestinal discomfort and could interfere with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, particularly with prolonged use.
What should I do?
If you have a bottle of SpringLeaf Fat Clear from above batch numbers, do not use it. Call Homart Pharmaceutical’s customer service line to arrange the return of affected product and a refund.
If you have taken the medicine and are concerned that you may have been exposed to increased levels of poliglusam, you should seek medical advice from your medical practitioner.
