Background
The TGA recently commissioned a report on the risks of self-harm from intentional paracetamol misuse in relation to the current access controls for paracetamol. The TGA commissioned the report because of concerns, particularly of families and healthcare professionals of affected consumers of paracetamol, regarding the number of poisonings and deliberate overdoses from paracetamol obtained from general retail outlets, and whether current access restrictions are appropriate. The report has been produced by a panel of independent experts and will be published in the week commencing 12 September 2022, along with a public notice inviting submissions on various options for amending the Poisons Standard to control the risks identified by the expert panel.
