As of May 2025, two HIV self-tests are approved for use in Australia, the Atomo HIV Self Test and the Panbio HIV Self-Test.
The Atomo HIV self-test was the first HIV IVD device for self-testing approved in Australia in November 2018. Conditions which placed limitations on the supply of this self-test changed on 22 October 2021 to improve the accessibility of HIV testing. The limitations on its supply were eased following further studies demonstrating the preferences, acceptability and significantly improved usability of this HIV self-test.
The same conditions of inclusion have been applied to the newly approved Panbio HIV self-test device.
HIV self-test sponsors may supply their devices through their official website, over-the-counter sales in pharmacies, and to other relevant businesses, organisations and institutions that work with communities at increased risk of HIV including gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). The advertising permission for HIV self-tests permits use of prohibited and restricted representations in marketing material associated with HIV self-testing.
Pharmacies and other organisations that supply the approved TGA HIV self-tests must have information available to ensure individuals can perform the test correctly and interpret the test result accurately. Every test comes with information about how to access support services, by phone or in person.
