Summary of proposed indication
PEGASYS (peginterferon alfa-2a) is proposed as a treatment for:
-polycythaemia vera, a type of blood cancer which results in too many red blood cells, causing the blood to become thick, preventing smooth flow through blood vessels. This increases the risk of blood clots, which can lead to a stroke or heart attack.
-thrombocythaemia, a type of blood cancer where the bone marrow produces too many platelets (thrombocytes), which are responsible for blood clotting. An excess of platelets can lead to inappropriate clotting, which can block blood flow which may cause a stroke or heart attack.
