Consumers and health professionals are advised that Kaiser Pharmaceutical, in consultation with the TGA, is recalling one batch of each of the following traditional Chinese medicine products:
- Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang (Tuhuo and Loranthus Combination) AUST L 218817 – batch number 46455621
- Chuan Xiong Cha Tiao San (Ligusticum and Tea Formula) AUST L 199791 – batch number 444159
- Dang Gui Si Ni Tang (Tangkuei and Jujube Combination) AUST L 206236 – batch number 46425717.
The above products include certain Asarum species, which have been documented to contain aristolochic acid(s). Asarum species containing aristolochic acid(s) for human therapeutic use are included in Schedule 10 of the Poisons Standard and are not permitted for use in therapeutic goods in Australia.
TGA testing of products from the above batches has detected very low levels of aristolochic acid.
There is no established safe exposure level to aristolochic acids, which have been linked to kidney problems and urinary tract cancers.
Information for consumers
If you or someone you provide care for takes Kaiser Pharmaceutical’s Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang, Chuan Xiong Cha Tiao San or Dang Gui Si Ni Tang traditional Chinese medicine products, please be aware of this issue.
Check the batch number displayed on the bottom right-hand side label of the bottle to see if it is from an affected batch.
If it is, do not take it. Return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
