Standards Australia publishes the Australian/New Zealand Sunscreen Standard which provides the testing and labelling requirements for sunscreens marketed in Australia.
The Sunscreen Standard is adopted by the TGA by referencing the document in the Therapeutic Goods Regulations 1990 (the Regulations) and the Therapeutic Goods (Excluded Goods) Determination 2018.
The standard that is currently referenced in the Regulations and the Excluded Goods order is the Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 2604:2012 Sunscreen products - Evaluation and classification.
The TGA is aware that the 2012 Sunscreen Standard is being updated and the next version is expected to be published by Standards Australia in mid-2021.
Information for sponsors of sunscreen products relating to the future inclusion of the revised standard in the Regulations and the Excluded Goods, and any transition arrangements, will be posted on this page.
The Department of Health and Aged Care acknowledges First Nations peoples as the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia, and their continuing connection to land, sea and community. We pay our respects to them and their cultures, and to all Elders both past and present.
