TGA collaborating to help ensure the supply of ventilators

2 April 2020

It is anticipated due to the COVID-19 pandemic, that there will be a surge in the number of patients requiring respiratory support, and there may be a shortfall in the number of devices available.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is communicating and collaborating with:

  • Australian sponsors to understand existing and future supply of devices
  • comparable international regulators to identify and leverage global efforts that could be used in Australia to support health system COVID-19 responses
  • the government/industry ventilator taskforce and relevant working groups focusing on supply and manufacturing capability in Australia

The TGA will continue to discuss with state and territory governments, the medical device industry and clinicians and publish guidance to allow them to safely use alternative devices when ICU ventilators are not available. Should they need to supplement capacity, this will allow clinicians to use mechanically similar devices, whose primary intended purpose differs from ICU ventilators (e.g. anaesthetic machines, home ventilators, transit ventilators).
