TGA approved terminology for medicines

Australian approved terms have been created to describe the way a medicine is presented to ensure consistency in the use of these terms for all medicines.

These terms are located in the Code Tables on the TBS website. For instructions on how to access these, go to: Where to find the approved terminology.

Container types

The availability of a container type will depend on whether the goods are registered medicines, listed medicines, biologicals or devices.

Definitions of container types in the Code Tables

These are for guidance only, and (although the examples may refer to specific materials) they are intended to be independent of the:

  • material used to make the container
  • the size of the container

Formal definitions are not provided for container types whose names have a well-understood meaning.

Under Public TGA Information, select Code Tables, then select Container Code.

Dosage forms

The availability of a dosage form will depend on whether the goods are registered medicines, listed medicines, biologicals or devices.

The availability of ‘units of proportion’ will depend on whether the goods are registered medicines, listed medicines, biologicals or devices.
