Compositional guideline: Deer velvet antler powder - amendment

Request to amend the acceptance criterion for the test parameter 'Ash'

28 March 2013

The TGA has received a request to amend the acceptance criterion for the test parameter 'Ash' in the compositional guideline for 'deer velvet antler powder' (under the heading 'organic or inorganic impurities or toxins').

Currently, the acceptance criterion for 'Ash' in the compositional guideline for 'deer velvet antler powder' is 15.0 - 39.7% (dried basis). These limits were determined on the data provided to the TGA during evaluation of the substance.

The original applicant has recently requested that these be amended and the upper limit changed to 47.6%. This change will make the upper limit of the acceptance criterion for 'Ash' consistent with that in the compositional guideline for 'deer velvet antler slice'. The two ingredients are obtained from the same source and the applicant states that the higher ash value simply reflects a higher proportion of fully mineralised velvet (i.e. bone) in the velvet powder.

As the change does not impact the safety or quality of the material, the TGA has no objection to this request and has amended the acceptance criterion for 'Ash' to 15.0 - 47.6% (dried basis) in the compositional guideline for 'deer velvet antler powder'.
