TGA News Issue 20 (November 1995) - Medicines Evaluation Committee formed

The Victorian Minister for Health, the Hon Marie Tehan MP, has created the Medicines Evaluation Committee (MEC), which will evaluate Non-Prescription registrable goods that are referred to it by the TGA. Before the MEC was created, the members of the Proprietary Medicines Advisory Committee (PMAC) carried out this role.

The MEC consists of the following members:
  • Dr Richard Whiting MB BS FRACP - Chairperson: Dr Whiting is a consultant geriatrician and member of the PMAC. He has been prominent in a number of medical organisations and has served on many Government committees.
  • Professor Barry Reed BPharm PhD FPS: Professor Reed is Professor of Biopharmaceutics at the Victorian College of Pharmacy, Monash University and was a member of the PMAC. He is a member of the Pharmacy Board of Victoria and was formerly a member of the Animal Preparations Board.
  • Associate Professor Robert Moulds BMedSc MB BS PhD FRACP: Dr Moulds is Director of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and Dean of the Clinical School. He has played a major role in producing the highly successful Victorian Drug Usage Advisory Committee guidelines. Dr Moulds was a member of the PMAC and is currently a member of many other academic and professional organisations.
  • Mr Robert Foster BPharm MPS: Mr Foster is a practising pharmacist. He is vice-president of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia (Victoria) and a member of several associated committees. He was a member of the PMAC and holds graduate qualifications from Deakin University.
  • Emeritus Professor Michael Rand MSc PhD: Professor Rand was formerly Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Melbourne and is Adjunct Professor at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University. Professor Rand has served on numerous Government committees and is currently a Commissioner of the National Food Authority. He is associated with many pharmacology publications.
  • Mr Graham Carnie Dip App Chem Dip Mgt: Mr Carnie is a chemist with extensive experience in the manufacture and quality control of pharmaceuticals. He has worked for several pharmaceutical companies and was employed by Sigma Pharmaceuticals Ltd for many years. He was founder and first President of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Group of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute. He has been on the editorial committee of the Australian Pharmaceutical Formulary.
  • Mrs Bronwyn Capanna BPharm MPS: Mrs Capanna is currently Technical Manager of the Proprietary Medicines Association of Australia Inc. A graduate of the University of Queensland, Mrs Capanna formerly held regulatory affairs positions in the pharmaceutical industry and is a member of a number of professional bodies, notably the National Drugs and Poisons Schedule Committee and the New South Wales Poisons Advisory Committee.
