Hugh Wilcock-Geoffrey Kaye Award for Martin Van Lith
The Society for Medical and Biological Engineering (Victoria) conferred the Hugh Wilcock-Geoffrey Kaye Award for 1995 on Martin Van Lith of the Therapeutic Devices Branch (TDB), for his contributions to medical and biological engineering. The award was presented at the Annual General Meeting of the Society on 15 August 1995. Speaking later at the annual dinner, Martin gave an entertaining and thought provoking talk on current and future issues in engineering and physical sciences in medicine.
Martin was President of the Australian Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (AFMBE) and also of the Society for Medical and Biological Engineering (SMBE) in Victoria; he was also a Foundation Member of a similar society in the ACT. He has been on organising committees for many national conferences; he was treasurer for the 2nd IFMBE Pan-Pacific Symposium held in Melbourne in1989, and was the scientific convenor for the 8th World Congress of the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics held in Melbourne in April 1995. Martin has also played a major role in establishing university education for biomedical engineeering in Victoria.
Martin joined the TDB, formerly located in Melbourne, in 1986 and was appointed Executive Secretary of TDEC and the TDB Scientific Secretary in June 1995.
