Professor Smith qualified in medicine in the UK, and subsequently underwent post-graduate specialist training in internal medicine and clinical pharmacology. He came to Australia in 1978 as Foundation Professor and has now become Emeritus Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Newcastle.
Professor Smith has a longstanding interest in complementary medicine, and the quality use of complementary medicines. He has been with the Complementary Medicines Evaluation Committee since 1999 in the capacity of Member and is currently its Chair. He is also a Member of the WHO Expert Committee on Drug Policy. He is a past Board Member of the National Prescribing Service, 1998-2001, past Chair of the Education working group of the National Prescribing Service, past Member of the Hunter Area Research Ethics Committee, and past Chair of the Pharmaceutical Health and Rational use of Medicines Committee of the Commonwealth.
Professor Smith is a frequent consultant to AusAID and WHO on matters relating to national drug policies and quality use of medicines.
