ADEC 40th anniversary dinner
The first Australian Drug Evaluation Committee (ADEC) meeting was held on 25 July 1963. The role of the committee was then, and continues to be, the provision of independent, scientific advice on new drugs, within the policy framework of the time, to the Federal Government. ADEC has met regularly since that first meeting - the August 2003 meeting is the 209th meeting.
The current ADEC core members are Professor Martin Tattersall (Chair), Professor Leonard Arnolda, Dr Alyson Kakakios, Professor David Le Couteur, Associate Professor Duncan Topliss and Associate Professor Anne Mijch. There are currently 18 associate members who provide expert advice on their areas of expertise, at the invitation of the Chair.
A dinner was held on 7 August 2003 to celebrate the achievements of the committee over the past 40 years. Terry Slater, National Manager TGA was the master of ceremonies and The Hon Trish Worth, MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health and Ageing delivered the keynote speech. Other speakers included Jane Halton, Secretary, Department of Health and Ageing, George Petrenas representing the Medicines Australia Board and Professor Martin Tattersall.
Other attendees included present ADEC members, former Chairs of ADEC and its sub-committee - the Adverse Drug Reaction Advisory Committee, and representatives from Medicines Australia and the Generic Medicines Industry Association.
