AIVC recommendations for the novel influenza A (H1N1) vaccine

The Australian Influenza Vaccine Committee (AIVC) on 27 May 2009, endorsed the WHO recommended virus for the novel influenza A (H1N1) vaccine. The vaccine should contain the following virus:

  • A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)v- like virus

There is insufficient information currently for a dosage recommendation. Please consult with TGA. A dosage of ≥ 15 µg HA/dose for split virus vaccine or ≥ 7.5 µg HA/dose for whole virion vaccine is anticipated.

The following viruses are recommended as suitable vaccine strains:

  • A/California/7/2009 (H1N1) (IVR-153) available from CSL (Australia)
  • A/California/7/2009 (H1N1) (NYMC X-179A) available from CDC (USA)

The SRID reference standard reagents for A/California/7/2009 (H1N1) (X-179A) strain will be available from TGA (Australia).

The Committee decided that the influenza vaccine components for the year 2009 season should contain the following:

  • A (H1N1): an A/Brisbane/59/2007 (H1N1) - like strain, 15 µg HA per dose
  • A (H3N2): an A/Brisbane/10/2007 (H3N2) - like strain, 15 µg HA per dose
  • B: a B/Florida/4/2006 - like strain, 15 µg HA per dose

The following viruses are recommended as suitable vaccine strains:

  • A/Brisbane/59/2007 (H1N1) (IVR-148)
  • A/Brisbane/10/2007 (H3N2) (IVR-147) or A/Uruguay/716/2007 (NYMC X -175C)
  • B/Florida /4/2006 or B/Brisbane/3/2007

The SRID reference standard reagents for A/Brisbane/59/2007 (H1N1) (IVR-148) strain are available from TGA or NIBSC (UK).

The SRID reference standard reagents for A/Brisbane/10/2007 (H3N2) (IVR-147) and B/Brisbane/3/2007 strains are available from TGA (Australia).

The SRID reference standard reagents for A/Uruguay/716/2007 (NYMC X -175C) and B/Florida /4/2006 are available from NIBSC.
