Australian Drug Evaluation Committee (ADEC)

The Australian Drug Evaluation Committee (ADEC) was formed in 1963 and given the role of providing independent, scientific advice on new drugs, within the policy framework of the time, to the Federal Government.

In 2010, ADEC was replaced by the Advisory Committee on Prescription Medicines (ACPM).

ADEC summary statement on HRT
Following publicaton of the results of the oestrogen only arm of the WHI study, the ADEC has reviewed and updated its statement on use of HRT to include reference to the newly available information.
Update to ADEC statement on use of hormone replacement therapy
In the light of the recent information on long term effects of HRT, the Australian Drug Evaluation Committee concluded that the use of HRT for any long term disease prevention cannot be generally justified as the potential harm may outweigh potential benefits.

Discussions between the Commonwealth Department of Health and senior Australian clinicians led to the establishment of the Australian Drug Evaluation Committee as an independent committee to advise on the safety of new drugs being imported into Australia and to formulate measures for the evaluation of possible adverse affects of drugs that were being used in Australia.
