OTC Medicines Section
The regulation of OTC medicines in Australia is the responsibility of the OTC Medicines Section which is part of the Office of Non Prescription Medicines of the TGA.
The Section's functions include pre-market evaluation and post-market surveillance of OTC medicines, secretariat for the Medicines Evaluation Committee <http://www.tga.gov.au/docs/html/mecinfo.htm> and policy advice on the regulation of OTC medicines.
The term 'OTC medicines' is defined in the Therapeutic Goods Regulations <http://www.tga.gov.au/legis/index.htm>. Products regulated as OTC medicines are specified in Part 3 of Schedule 10 to the Regulations. In some circumstances, sponsors may apply to have 'prescription medicines' regulated as 'OTC medicines'.
