Understanding the capability map

The capability map

The TGA uses a behaviourally based competitive selection process where all applicants are assessed against the Capability Map. The Capability Map describes the capabilities each staff member requires to work effectively at a particular level. The Capability Map that applies to this classification can be found by following the link to the relevant classification. The six key capability areas are:

  1. Aligns with organisational goals/contributes to strategic thinking
  2. Achieves results
  3. Supports/cultivates working relationships
  4. Shows/exemplifies personal drive and integrity
  5. Communicates clearly and effectively/communicates with influence
  6. Applies and builds appropriate skills, knowledge and experience
  • All staff at a particular classification are expected to meet the first five capabilities at that classification and applicants must demonstrate that they possess these capabilities during the recruitment and selection process.
  • The sixth capability allows for job specific requirements. The job specific capabilities for each advertised vacancy are listed under capability 6 on the Job Requirements form contained in the individual Applicant Kit.

Depending on the requirements of the specific position, each capability may be weighted at between 10% and 50% of the assessment total. This means that some capabilities are more critical to certain positions than others.

When you apply for a position in the TGA you need to demonstrate what you have done and how you have done it in your work and day to day life, and its relevance to the six capabilities. To assist you to demonstrate your previous skills and experience the selection committee has developed specific questions against the capabilities. Your Response to the Capability Questions will provide the selection committee with the information to make an assessment of your skills and experience relevant to the advertised vacancy.

Failure to submit a Response to the Capability Questions will usually result in you not proceeding further in the selection process.
